Diane von Furstenberg celebrates trailblazing women with 2019 DVF Awards

Diane von Furstenberg has celebrated trailblazing women at the 2019 DVF Awards.

The Belgium-born fashion designer and her media mogul husband Barry Diller founded the event in 2010 in association with their The Diller-von Furstenberg Family Foundation in 2010 in order to recognize and support "extraordinary women who are dedicated to transforming the lives of other women".

Held as part of the Women in the World conference at the Brooklyn Museum in New York City on Thursday night (11Apr19), those honoured at the 10th anniversary of the awards including attorney and academic Anita F. Hill, singer Katy Perry, Iraqi human rights activist Nadia Murad, The Alchemist Lab founder Hadeel Mustafa Anabtawi, and activist Susan Burton.

Speaking to CBS This Morning prior to the prizegiving, Diane explained that she was thrilled to be feting a group of women who act as strong role models for the next generation.

"I am part of a generation that I'm a feminist. I grew up with Gloria Steinem. So, I'm a feminist with as many M's as possible," the 72-year-old smiled. "Then I guess that my daughter's generation, they kind of took it for granted. But now that I see my granddaughters, they are bada*ses. They're not going to take anything. I think this is a good time, but I think we cannot let it go by. We have to seize it because the 21st century is the century for women if we want to save the world."

The Diller-von Furstenberg Family Foundation grants each honouree $50,000 (£38,000) for their non-profit organization in order to further their important work.

And at the ceremony, Firework hitmaker Katy shared that she was excited to receive The Inspiration DVF Award, though admitted that she was extremely inspired by Diane's life and commitment to promoting women's causes.

"I always admired her from afar but being able to really know her has really cemented (my) admiration and the respect I have for her," the star reflected in an interview with Entertainment Tonight. "She's persevered and been resilient and she's really what I wanna grow up to be."
