H&M has thrown a dance extravaganza to celebrate the launch of their Kenzo collaboration.
The highly anticipated partnership between the Swedish high street retailer and the Paris-based luxury label was unveiled at Pier 36 in New York on Wednesday night (19Oct16).
To the rhythm of a customized remix of Express Yourself by Sam Spiegel, dancers, beatboxers, whistlers and musicians came together to celebrate the power of individual expression, with guests such as Sienna Miller, Rosario Dawson, Iman, Spike Jonze, Joe Jonas, Elizabeth Olsen and Lupita Nyong'o all sitting front row.
The excitement of the Jean-Paul Goude-directed show was reflected in the vibrant and playful energy of the collection, which was designed by Kenzo creative directors Carol Lim and Humberto Leon.
Taking a page from founder Kenzo Takada’s book, models wore printed leggings with blown-up Kimono-inspired coats, denim jackets and jeans with tiger stripes and leopard print off-the-shoulder tops and skirts over turtlenecks. Gypsy silhouette dresses were oversized and worn with split toe tiger stripe socks and Japanese Geta-style sandals.
Lim and Leon also mined the Kenzo archive for shapes and techniques they could mix with creations of their own. For instance, there were also nods to Takada’s relaxed streetwear, seen in Lim and Leon’s wide-leg trousers from their first collection for the brand, Takada’s ribbon dress is recreated at an H&M price, as well as their famed tiger logo sweatshirts.
As the show finished the celebration continued with a performance by rapper and surprise guest Ice Cube.
“Tonight was a celebration of everything we love about Kenzo x H&M – it was a fun, vibrant and unexpected celebratory mix of different worlds coming together. It was a show we will never forget,” said Lim and Leon in a statement.
The Kenzo x H&M collection will be available in over 250 H&M stores worldwide, as well as online, from 3 November (16).
