Manolo Blahnik plans to make shoes until he "drops".
The Spanish designer has been in the shoe game since the early 1970s, winning accolades such as Accessory Designer of the Year from the British Fashion Council and the Lifetime Achievement Award from Footwear News over the years.
Even after all this time, Blahnik has no intention of throwing the towel in until he's physically unable to create anymore.
“If you love what you do, you enjoy it till you drop,” he told W magazine, expressing interest in writing about cathedrals in his home country Spain. “I would love to take six months and go around with a driver and a good map to all the Romanesque and baroque churches that inspire me. But, oh, my God, I have so much going on - I haven’t time to do anything!”
His unique and distinct designs have won him countless famous fans, from Kate Moss to Blake Lively, and have even appeared in popular culture through inclusion in TV show Sex and the City and film Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn.
When described as the "hippest" man in the shoe business, Blahnik insists that isn't the case.
“The hippest?!” he quipped. “At 73, I’m definitely the oldest! Well, not as old as Valentino and Armani and Mr. Lagerfeld - those boys are in their 80s.”
Earlier this year (16) Manolo joined the online sales bandwagon by launching his first ever global e-commerce store alongside internet marketplace Farfetch. Kristina Blahnik, managing director of Manolo Blahnik, felt confident that this move would help expand the brand's creative opportunities.
“We don’t see this as a commercial venture, but instead as a site curated to showcase the depth of Manolo’s creativity for the first time in the digital realm,” she said in a statement.
