Robert De Niro slams Donald Trump as he takes home comedy award

The American population go to the polls on Tuesday (08Nov16) as Democratic candidate Hillary takes on Republican Donald Trump in the race for the White House.

And clearly well aware of the fact time is running out to change people's minds on who to vote for, De Niro did his utmost to once again slam Trump as he took to the stage to accept the Hollywood Comedy Award at the 20th annual Hollywood Film Awards at the Hilton Beverly Hills on Sunday night (06Nov16).

"We are here to celebrate the movies of Hollywood and nobody throws a party better than (awards founder) Carlos de Abreu and the Hollywood Film Awards," the 73-year-old actor began. "But the shadow of politics is hanging over us more than anything else and it’s hard to think of anything else. We have the opportunity to prevent Tuesday from turning into a tragedy. So vote for Hillary Clinton."

This isn't the first time De Niro has pledged his support to Clinton; last month (Oct16) he caused controversy when he admitted he wanted to punch the politician in the face.

De Niro, best known for his dramatic work in films such as Raging Bull, was recognized for his hilarious turn in upcoming dark comedy The Comedian, which tells the story of an ageing comic star, who grows close to the daughter of a real estate mogul.

The actor wasn't the only famous face to address the U.S. election at the awards. Host James Corden kicked off the evening by telling the crowd: "This is it. This could be the last awards ceremony before the apocalypse. Come Wednesday morning we could all be watching a real-life version of The Purge."

Meanwhile, despite not referring to Clinton by name, Leonardo DiCaprio made it clear who he'd be voting for as he took home the Hollywood Documentary Award for Before the Flood.

"Let's all use our power as citizens to do the right thing," he said. "Please vote... Vote for people who believe in the science of climate change."

Trump previously claimed that the Chinese government is responsible for fabricating the concept of climate change.

Natalie Portman addressed the controversial election as she accepted the Hollywood Actress Award. The star is no stranger to the political world, as she plays Jackie Kennedy, wife of late President John F. Kennedy, in upcoming movie Jackie. Of the role, Natalie explained: "We have obviously heard so many crazy things that have been said about women this year politically and to women and I feel so lucky to be a part of this film that is about a woman who was known maybe first for being a wife - first to Kennedy and then to (Aristotle) Onassis - but then really became someone who could be recognized on her own merits just as Jackie."

Other stars honored at the star-studded awards on Sunday night included Justin Timberlake, who received the Hollywood Song Award for his track Can't Stop the Feeling from the soundtrack of animated movie Trolls.

Taking to the stage to pick up his gong, Justin admitted to the audience: "I kind of didn’t know what the hell I was doing. Don’t tell anybody that!"
