Shannen Doherty: 'Cancer has remade me so many times'

Shannen Doherty has been remade as a "completely different" person since being diagnosed with cancer.

The 45-year-old actress confirmed in 2015 that she was battling breast cancer, and has been very public about her battle against the disease on her social media pages.

During an interview with Chelsea Handler, to air on Netflix on Friday night (28Oct16), Shannen explains that she never realised just how much her health struggles would change her as a person.

“I think what’s beautiful and hard and interesting about cancer is that it tears you down and builds you, and tears you down and builds you,” Shannen said. “It remakes you so many different times. The person I thought I was supposed to be or was going to be or who I thought I was six months ago is now somebody completely different. I realise ‘Wow, I really thought that I was so brave and so gracious this entire time and really I was just hiding.’"

Her words saw Chelsea struggle to hold back tears. But the actress told the host, "Don't cry!", before she continued with her interview.

Shannen added: "This was very hard and not humbling – because I’ve already been humbled by cancer. It was hard in the sense of rethinking sort of who you are and how you come to terms with who are now and accepting it and looking at your husband (Kurt Iswarienko), and thinking like, ‘Dude, I’m so sorry.’”

Meanwhile, Shannen's former Beverly Hills, 90210 co-star Tori Spelling has sent her support to the actress, admitting she has been following her journey via social media.

“I haven’t personally seen her, but I obviously have followed her fight,” Tori old E! News. “It’s been amazing how she’s done it through social media. I give her props for that. I think she’s standing up for a lot of women everywhere that are fighting that battle.

“She’s doing a brave and wonderful job, and we obviously support her. We’ve all been talking and supporting her from afar. It’s really hard to know what to do when someone’s going through that - if they want people there or not there. But I think she’s very brave and I admire her so much.”
