Tommy Hilfiger has set the record straight over comments he made in an interview about Gigi Hadid.
The American fashion designer spoke about his career and collaboration with the 21-year-old model in a recent interview, sharing that a casting director for one of his shows had once said she didn't "fit in" with the others models due to her body shape.
"Our casting director said, 'She doesn’t really fit because you know she’s not quite as tall as the other girls, she’s not quite as thin,'" he said of Gigi in an interview with Yahoo! Style on Wednesday (02Nov16).
The compromise was for her to model in a poncho that "covered a lot of her body unfortunately," Hilfiger added.
While it was the casting director, not Hilfiger, who made the disparaging comments about Gigi’s appearance, the wording set off a slew of backlash online.
However, the veteran designer has spoken out to clarify any confusion surrounding his remarks.
"The casting people put Gigi in the poncho, and I was not happy," he said to Page Six in reference to the controversial interview. "I was saying, 'Don't hide her body'…The suggestion that I thought she wasn’t thin enough upsets me to no end. Gigi is the epitome of perfection."
In the end, however, the poncho ended up being the bestselling item from Hilfiger’s collection that season.
Gigi has also starred in other Tommy Hilfiger shows since 2015, and is the face of Tommy Hilfiger fragrance The Girl. The pair also has their own collection together.
Thankfully, the blonde beauty has in the past been able to weather criticism about her physique.
In an interview for Vogue’s podcast in July, Gigi said that as difficult as it can be to deal with comments about her appearance, she tries not to let it affect her self-worth.
"I never didn’t like my body. I was very athletic. I was proud of why my body was the way it was," she shared.
